I was reading a newspaper article recently which quoted an American Author Willa Carter. In 1927 she said:
“Men travel faster but I do not know if they go to better things.”
In the 21st century, transport and technologies have taken us to a time and place where we do not want to wait for anything. Like children on a car journey asking after 20 minutes: “Are we nearly there yet?” we seek instant gratification.
I have also been reading a lot about people’s experiences with Volkswagen Camper vans. Many people dream of owning an iconic “old” van but find the reality of ownership does not meet their modern needs. Waiting for things to happen, the looking forward has always been, to me, just as valuable an experience as the actual event itself. Journeys in Dora are often like that. There is great excitement about the trip to come, the planning and the dreaming but the reality is often soggy, journey times slow and we have returned from holidays on the back of a break down truck many more times than I care to remember. That being said each trip has been an adventure and the slower pace of the journey in an old van is a reminder that we do not have to rush through life. It also gives time for reflection and, I have met some very characterful break down men.
One thing for sure is that owning and travelling in an old van is not for the faint hearted.
