A new website demands a new blog.
Over the next days and weeks each blog will feature a new word. I am going to take a journey through the alphabet, rambling my way, in some confusion, to discuss life and make an attempt to bring it back to travel. Let’s see how it goes………
The first word is “awesome.”
The word awesome can be said to mean:
Wonder, breath-taking, humbling.
Awesome has become a word which we use freely, and, without thought of its true meaning. Of course, the way we use words does change over time. Awesome was used in the 17th century to mean feelings of dread. It has changed over the centuries to take on the meaning of “impressive” or “really good.”
Awesome is a word used mostly by teenagers and young people. It has become the go to adjective of the youth. The mediocre has become awesome and so we have diminished the power of this word. We merit the trivial, we value the ordinary and we celebrate the second-rate.
To be filled with awe, for me, implies that in some way my emotions have been touched, that I have been moved, either, by a beautiful view, music or artwork.
Travelling in itself is not awesome; at times it can be dreadful. However, what we can experience through travel can be awesome. I can bring to mind landscapes which were humbling in their beauty. The view at the top of a chairlift, when the whole of a mountain range suddenly opens itself up to you, the breath-taking west coast sunset or the power of nature demonstrated by the power of storm waves crashing over a breakwater. These can be said to be awe inspiring.
In the little time we have on this mortal coil we should make it our aim to have awesome experiences. Get out there into the word and look around you. Seek the truly awesome and take it home with you so that, on ordinary days, not filled with awe, you can sustain yourself until you can get back into your camper van and travel the highways. Remind yourself that you live in a world full of wonder. You will not experience awe in front of your television, games counsel or down the pub. To feed your soul and your mind, get out of your house and travel. Thank you for taking the time to read to the end of this, now switch off your screen and start the adventure.
